History - Rovaniemi

Rovaniemi has a rich history that dates back to the early 19th century when it was established as a town. It grew rapidly due to its strategic location along the Kemijoki River, becoming a hub for trade and transportation in Lapland.

The city was heavily damaged during World War II but was rebuilt with a modern design, notably by architect Alvar Aalto. Today, Rovaniemi is known as the official hometown of Santa Claus and a gateway to the Arctic, attracting visitors from around the world.
