History
New Mexico's history is rich and complex, shaped by Native American, Spanish, and Mexican influences. The region was home to various indigenous tribes long before European contact, with significant cultural contributions that continue today.
In 1540, Spanish explorer Francisco Vázquez de Coronado arrived, leading to centuries of colonial rule. New Mexico became a U.S. territory in 1848 and achieved statehood in 1912, making it one of the last states to join the Union.
